Stress, poor eating habits and physical inactivity are exposing us to greater health risks. The cost of cardiovascular diseases and stroke in the United States in 2002 is estimated at $392.2 billion. Half of all cardiovascular problems occur in people who do not have high cholesterol. Less active persons have a 20% to 50% greater risk of developing high blood pressure. Poor diet contributes to high blood pressure, high cholesterol and excess body weight. About 41.3 million American adults have cholesterol levels of 240mg/dL or greater (high cholesterol). A family history of diabetes, gout, high blood pressure or high cholesterol also increases the risk of heart disease. The risk of heart disease associated with physical inactivity is comparable to that for high cholesterol, high blood pressure or smoking. A 10% decrease in total cholesterol levels may result in an estimated 30% reduction in the incidence of cardiovascular disease. In 1998 about 29% of Americans age 18 or older reported no leisure-time physical activity. People who have excess body fat are more likely to develop cardiovascular problems even if they no other risk factors.
